The first entry in the acclaimed Ruth Galloway series follows the "captivating"* archaeologist as she investigates a child's bones found on a nearby beach, thought to be the remains of a little girl who went missing ten years before.

Forensic archeologist Dr. Ruth Galloway is in her late thirties. She lives happily alone with her two cats in a bleak, remote area near Norfolk, land that was sacred to its Iron Age inhabitants—not quite earth, not quite sea. But her routine days of digging up bones and other ancient objects are harshly upended when a child’s bones are found on a desolate beach. Detective Chief Inspector Nelson calls Galloway for help, believing they are the remains of Lucy Downey, a little girl who went missing a decade ago and whose abductor continues to taunt him with bizarre letters containing references to ritual sacrifice, Shakespeare, and the Bible. Then a second girl goes missing and Nelson receives a new letter—exactly like the ones about Lucy.

Is it the same killer? Or a copycat murderer, linked in some way to the site near Ruth’s remote home?

Fun read

I would read more in this series as this novel had interesting characters, a good plot and an involving historical and archeological thread. The setting also had a dramatic quality.

Great to Curl up With

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which was a perfect combination with a rainy day and roaring fire! Ruth, the main character, is not your ordinary heroine: middle aged, over weight, self-proclaimed "average". But she's got a wonderful heart, brains and I love it that she's her own person and carries on in her life without excuses and self-imposed limitations. She questions her life and her choices and she really grows in this storyline. I loved the info about archaeology and the Druids and folklore. The book has some great twists and turns and towards the end of the book I could not put it down.

The Crossing Places

This novel combines tight writing style with clever plot and excellent character development. Dr. Ruth Galloway is smart and confident in her area of expertise, though she has lots of human flaws that make her interesting and not too perfect. This holds r all of the characters, who have a good mix of strengths and weaknesses. The descriptions of landscape and the Norfolk coast are lovely.
